Greetings from Maui! As the summer solstice rapidly approaches, Maui denizens are treated to a short period of longer days and evenings with what seem like endless twilights. Most of the year Maui days end rather abruptly at about 6pm, but June blesses us with evenings that last until after 7 o'clock. I've selected a detail of one of my favorite paintings, Upcountry Amethyst, for the cover of the 2014 Desktop Calendar. This scene depicts the exquisite lighting of one of those rare twilights that are like a bridge between the window of the day and the shadow of the night. It has all the elements I love to paint.
